Well. My mechanism design teacher decided we needed to make an experimental Grashof mechanism.... Without giving us tools, parts or a motor to use... So I went in search of legos and made one myself.
The issue is that these old lego beams and their joints, well, they have a lot of friction I believe the black joints are meant to be immobile . The motor I was using didn’t have enough torque to move them. So I built a gearbox.
Then later on I tried to make a double rocker mechanism but I didn’t make it correctly, so I destroyed a gear. Goes to show what a 8.5:1 gearbox can do.
I ran out of gears for the type, so I used a slip gear instead, this way I wouldn’t be blowing gearboxes anymore.

Silicone grease is an excellent lubricant for smooth ABS.

Or I could grind those joints past the point of fixed usability with TORQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nah, I kid. If I can get some when I turn it in then I guess I’ll use some of that.

Grey pins are for pivots. Or use 4-piece long rods with the little grey bits as fasteners, either method would give you smooth motion.

I’d wish my teacher was that thorough, the class is super slow. we’ve been stuck on Grashof since August. Knowing the guys over at the computer laboratories, he might even put my project on some sort of pedestal.
Back when I took computer modeling 101 I made a simple one piston engine and now they have a poster of it.

OH so that’s what those grey things were for!
The gearbox fixed the friction issue, it also reduced the output speed, which makes the mechanism easier to see in action.
